Interested in a career in the field of sport and entertainment management? Well, you are in luck, because this month’s alumnus spotlight features a successful UofSC graduate in the sport and entertainment industry.
Meet Patrick Donovan. Patrick is the Senior Manager for Sponsorship Strategy at MKTG, a sponsorship and lifestyle marketing company that partners with brands in the sports and entertainment industry.
A few of the properties MKTG works with include the Super Bowl, The Masters, the Olympics and the Daytona 500. In his role, Patrick offers strategic guidance to clients on sports and lifestyle sponsorship marketing topics including contract negotiation, partnership evaluation, talent selection, measurement and platform development.
A 2007 graduate, Patrick’s involvement on campus propelled him forward in his career and led him to becoming an engaged alumnus. During his time at UofSC, Patrick was fortunate enough to enroll in a few graduate-level integrated marketing classes. These classes piqued his interest in branding and marketing strategy. The knowledge learned from these courses in addition to the experience he gained from two premier sports properties internships ultimately led Patrick to his current job.
Once Patrick became an alumnus of South Carolina, he knew he wanted to stay involved and give back to his alma mater. After seeing an open position for My Carolina’s Young Alumni Council Charlotte seat, he decided to apply. Fortunately, Patrick was selected for the position and currently serves on the council, enhancing digital and marketing initiatives. The council meets monthly to discuss young alumni engagement strategies and to identify ways in which they can engage alumni in more enriching and fulfilling ways.
Patrick’s current advice to students is twofold. Personally, he encourages students to “challenge YOUR status quo, find ways to get involved on campus, and enjoy the ride”. Professionally, Patrick reminds students that “A vision grounded in compassion and punctuality will take you far!”
My Carolina encourages alumni to stay involved, just as Patrick has done. There are many ways to stay engaged, including joining an affinity council, such as the young alumni council, joining your local alumni club or becoming a social media ambassador. No matter how you choose to stay involved, heed Patrick’s advice; “always remember…student for a short time, Gamecock for a lifetime!”
