College Cure 101

If you’ve lived in a college dorm or have ever been on a college campus for classes, you know the dreaded “College Crud” that knocks your immune system around every semester! Keep reading for our tips on staying healthy this semester.

Following the CDC Health Guidelines during a Pandemic
It is no surprise to any of us that this semester at UofSC will look a little different than last thanks to COVID-19. But, no matter that outcome, we want all Gamecocks to stay safe throughout the busy Fall semester. It is crucial that during your time on campus you are wearing a mask and keeping your distance from other students, faculty, and staff while going about your day! It is also critical that you maintain a 6-foot distance always! I am sure the University of South Carolina is going to do everything to try and keep their students safe while on campus. Every Gamecock needs to do their part as well!

Focus on a Sleep Schedule
For most college students, going to bed and waking up at the same time each day is almost impossible! The late nights at the library cramming for an exam or a late ice cream to reward yourself can mess up any type of schedule put in place. Despite your busy schedule, do your best to get the recommended eight hours of sleep each night. You will feel the difference and so will your immune system!

Utilize ALL Resources on Campus
Here at the University of South Carolina, we have amazing facilitates such as the Strom Thurmond Fitness Center and Blatt P.E. Center that offer great fitness classes and workout equipment to keep your muscles and endurance strong enough to withstand any sickness thrown your way! Make sure to get in the recommended 30 minutes of exercise a day to ensure that your body is gaining muscle and keeping out various viruses that run rampant on a college campus.

Try to Maintain Healthy Eating Habits
We know it may be difficult to eat a balanced meal when Russell House has wonderful options such as Chick-fil-a and Panera Bread. Trust us, we’ve been in your shoes. All those chicken nuggets and French fries seem amazing until you feel like you cannot move anymore. Treat yourself from time to time, but don’t forget to eat that salad every once in a while.

Stay Hydrated on the Right Liquids
On a college campus, soda, Gatorade, and other sugary drinks are readily available all-around campus. It is very tempting to buy that cold fountain drink when you’ve had a stressful day, but remember you are now living in Columbia, South Carolina, one of the hottest and most humid places in the South. YOU NEED TO KEEP YOUR BODY HYDRATED! By keeping your body hydrated properly, you are allowing your immune system to focus on fueling your brain and body to be the healthiest you can be!

Remember, college is supposed to be the best four years of your life and we want you to remain healthy! We hope our few tips help you stay in good health so you can thrive this semester!
